Galena Kansas, died at 7:15 pm Monday, Oct 26, 1998, at his home after a long illness. He was 71. He was born Jul 18, 1927, in Hockerville Oklahoma. He had lived in this area most of his life. He was in the United States Army Infantry in Fairbanks Alaska, from 1950 to 1951. When he returned from the service, he worked for the Ballard Mine and Mill of Baxter Springs Kansas. When the mines closed, he worked for the City of Baxter Springs Kansas street department. He later worked as a custodian for the Federal Building in Joplin Missouri, then the United States Post Offices in Springfield Missouri, and retired in January 1988, from the United States, Post Office in Neosho Missouri, because of an illness. He was a member of the Baxter Springs Auxiliary Police Force and the Cherokee county sheriff's Posse. He belonged to the American Legion of Baxter Springs and the Peoria Oklahoma Assembly of God Church. He married Betty Hobson at Bentonville Arkanas, Oct 9, 1951. She survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Helen Williams, Hockerville, and Dorothy Greenlee, Picher and one brother, Wilbur Simpson, rural Quapaw Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and two infant sons. The service will be at 2 pm Thursday at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel in Baxter Springs Kansas, with brother Calvin Ackerson officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Hill cemetery in Galena. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight, at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Bill Gold, Wally Sowder, Bob Mercer, Rod Day, Rex Randall, Bill Randall, Orvil Patton and Steve Smith.
