Abstract Data

Corporal Cooper, 21, who lived at Picher Oklahoma prior to his enlistment in the Army about two years ago, was killed in action in Belgium on Jan 18, a War department telegram to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Cooper of Chetopa Kansas, Route 3, disclosed recently. Prior to his entering the Army about two years ago, Corporal Cooper was employed in his father's ice plant at Picher. He served in the European theater of operations for the past three months after receiving training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and Camp Breckenridge Kentucky. Other survivors include a brother, Harry Cooper of Kansas City, and two sisters, Mrs. Delia Rader of Tulsa Oklahoma and Mrs. Irene McFerron of Miami.

--- Picher, Dec 2 Special--The body of Corporal Fred James Cooper, one of America's World War II dead, will arrive in Miami at 1:13 pm Wednesday. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Cooper of Chetopa Kansas, Route 3, Corporal Cooper lost his life on a European battlefield on Jan 18, 1945. besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Harvey Cooper of Webb City Missouri and two sisters, Mrs. Irene McFerron of Miami, and Mrs. Della Raider of Tulsa Oklahoma. The body will be escorted by Cpl. Gerhard J. Stelter. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Goodson-Durnil funeral home in Picher. Note: The articles have two different names for the brother.

...service will be conducted at the First Baptist church in Picher at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Gloyd Lukehart will officiate. the Picher post of the American legion will be in charge of military rites. Pallbearers will be Bob Christian, Clarence Price, Alvin Covington, Jesse Bogard, Bob Nyberg, Elmer Cash, Bob Webb and Ralph Leslie. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery at Miami under direction of the Goodson-Durnil funeral home. Corporal Cooper was killed in action on a European battlefield on Jan 18, 1945.
