A 50 year old district miner and resident of Baxter Springs Kansas community many years, died at 2:20 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the City hospital in Columbus as a result of second degree burns sustained when his house was gutted by fire about 10 hours earlier. The miner, it was reported, was asleep when flames of unknown origin, suddenly enveloped his home early Saturday morning. The fire was discovered by neighbors who awakened West and removed him from his home a scant few seconds before the structure caved in. Suffering from severe burns, West was rushed to the Columbus hospital. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Amanda McAlester of Baxter Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Maude Clarke of Picher Oklahoma, Mrs. George Conner of Baxter Springs and Mrs. Carl Riggs, of Galena Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Durnil funeral chapel in Picher with the Rev. J. H. Mott officiating. Burial will be in the Miami G.A.R. cemetery.
