Abstract Data
WORLD WAR I - Mining Man Says Indians Scalped Men They Killed. F. M. Vaughter, in charge of the sludge department at the new Skelton Mill No. 7 at Douthat Oklahoma, who was a lieutenant in the field artillery in the overseas army, says that some of the Indians who went to war from Oklahoma, brought back a lot of Boche scalps with them. Mr. Vaughter knew an Indian from Chickasha Oklahoma, who was called Big Chief who had 153 scalps and his brother had more than 100. Their plan was to crawl across No Man's Land in the dark and slip into the trenches of the enemy and kill them like a ferret kills rats, using a knife as a weapon. When asked if it were not possible that the braves scalped men they found dead, Mr. Vaughter said no, that in that case they could have had thousands of them. They scorned to take the lock from a man another had killed but would risk any danger to have the pleasure of cutting off a scalp of a foe killed by their own hand.
