85, died at 6:55 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2000 at Galena Nursing Center, Galena Kansas. Bud was born July 11, 1914 at Galena. His parents were Charles Sweet and Bessie Jones Sweet. He had lived in Galena all of his life. He worked a number of years as a miner. He later became an equipment operator, working for Cooper Construction, Joplin Missouri, retiring in 1976. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena, the Galena Elks Lodge and the Spring River Boat and Ski Club. His favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing. He was married to Fern Lammers on July 20, 1937 at Joplin. She died Oct 10, 1984. Surviving are two sons Charles F. Sweet and wife, Betty Sweet, and Kenny Sweet and wife, Maria Sweet, both of Galena; two daughters, Phyllis Brown and husband, Ernie Brown, Joplin, and Mary Gilbert and husband, Bob Gilbert, Galena; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and four great- great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, one daughter, Judy Stapleton; one grandson, Jeff Stapleton; and one sister, Arietta Anderson, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday April 24 at Derfelt funeral home, Galena. Rev. Rodney Castleberry will officiate. The Galena Elks Lodge will conduct graveside rites. Pallbearers will be members of the Elks Lodge. The family will be at the home of the daughter, Mary Gilbert, 1009 Short Street, Galena. There is a photo with the article. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25 at the Baxter cemetery Baxter Springs Kansas.
