Abstract Data

a 50 year old Commerce man was found burned to death in his home this morning. Carl Swartz apparently died when the mattress of his bed caught fire, possible from a cigaret. He suffered extensive burns over his body. Swartz's son, Joy Swartz of Commerce, found the body about 8:30 o'clock lying on the bedroom floor. The mattress was destroyed but there was no other fire damage, according to investigators. Commerce police chief Earl Brookshire, Ottawa county Oklahoma Deputy Curtis Myers and a Miami physician investigated. Swartz, a miner, had lived in Commerce the past 16 years. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Alene Beasley, Liberal Kansas; Mrs. Lila Gazette, Liberal Kansas; and Mrs. Hazel Hirsh, Weir Kansas.
