Smith, Edward B.
Abstract Data
Joplin Missouri. Accidental death as a result of inhaling carbon monoxide gas was the verdict given late yesterday afternoon by Coroner, W. G. Hogan following an investigation into the death of Edward B. Smith, 40 years old, an assistant insurance adjuster of the Eagle-Picher Company, who was found dead yesterday afternoon at the steering wheel of his motor car in a garage near the Olivia apartments, where he lived. The coroner expressed belief Smith had not been in the car more than two or three hours before his body was found. Eagle-Picher officials said Smith left the downtown office shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning, saying he was going to his garage in an attempt to get his car started. Water in his car's radiator had frozen, he said. Belief was expressed he apparently was overcome by fumes while warming up the motor. Smith's body was found by Curtis, he heard the motor of the car running. Because the garage doors were closed, Mack opened them to investigate, and found Smith's body. Mrs. Smith said she felt some anxiety when her husband failed to come to lunch, but thought he had been delayed because of business. Smith was born in Delaware Ohio, going from there to the West. He was associated with copper mines in Arizona until about seven years ago when he moved to Miami and became assistant cashier of the St. Louis Mining and Smelting Company. He moved to Joplin Missouri several months ago, and had been an assistant to John Campbell, adjuster of the Eagle-Picher Company since Nov 15th. Besides his wife, Mrs. Ruth Mack, 301 Sergeant ave; his mother, Mrs. Ella E. Smith of Delaware Ohio; and a sister, Winifred Smith of Delaware. The body will be sent to Denver Colorado for funeral services and burial. The body is in state at the Hurlbut undertaking company establishment. Note: The name Mack doesn't seem to be connected with other names, and Smith's wife's name is listed as Mack, which doesn't make sense, but that is what the article said.
