Short, Jesse

Abstract Data

Mine owner Jess M. Short operated the most productive mines in the Tri-State district. He was respected by employees and area residents to the extent that two groups, his workers and Joplin News, Joplin Missouriboys, contributed toward two English Sheffield commemorative trays inscribed with the names of the contributors which were presented to him for Christmas 1912. A full page in the Mar 9, 1913, Joplin News, Joplin Missouri Herald displayed the trays which could be seen in the Reinheimer Jewelry Store.

Rich mining operator, of Joplin Missouri spent the first of the week in the Miami Oklahoma district, touring the camp in his big red automobile. He was here for the purpose of getting some leases. He said "you fellows over here are so fast, that I have concluded to break in and play the game with you. I have some leases and want some more. I will be at work in this camp within a week or ten days." With these remarks he threw on the juice, and speeded away with a characteristic Jesse Short dash. When told by his friends that he took a great chance in resisting the robber who shot him on a Kansas City Southern train a few days ago, he responded, that was what he was there for. So too, he intends this camp to take a chance and he will play the game to the limit. He is rich and a plunger, owns several big producers in the Joplin district, and his coming here should be a boom for the camp.
