Abstract Data

a 69 year old retired Douthat Oklahoma millman, was fatally injured about 6 Monday evening when a pickup truck in which he was riding over-turned on U.S. Highway 69, east of Cardin Oklahoma, Jack Rollins, highway patrolman, said. The wreck victim's daughter, Mrs. Goldie Perry, 44 year old Douthat woman, was also injured in the accident, while three other members of Shoemaker's family escaped unhurt. Rushed to Miami Baptist hospital in a Durnil ambulance, the elderly district millman died upon arrival here, according to Rollins, who said death was attributed to a skull fracture. Shoemaker was riding in the rear of the truck, driven by his son, Clarence shoemaker, 45, Baxter Springs Kansas, Route 1. The driver and his wife, Mrs. Gladys Shoemaker, 33, both escaped without injuries. Mrs. Perry, according to physicians at the hospital, suffered a sprained back and wrist. Rollins said the accident occurred when the truck struck loose gravel while turning from the highway onto a road at the east edge of Cardin, near the Rialto Mine. The truck, a 1940 Ford, was only slightly damaged, he reported. No charges have been filed. Other survivors of the wreck victim include: four sons, Oliver Shoemaker and Denzel Shoemaker, Picher; George Shoemaker, Douthat, and Don Shoemaker, Idaho; four daughters, Mrs. Nadine Smith and Mrs. Juanita Smith, Picher; Mrs. Mae Nixon, Columbus Kansas, and Mrs. Callie Crow, Fairland Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
