Shinn, John H.

Abstract Data

Earl Wilson, II, and his grandfather, John H. Shinn, watched television late Saturday night as they had done many times before. The boy had made his home with the retired Quapaw Oklahoma miner as long as he could remember. After switching off the TV set, they went to bed, but not for long. It was shortly after midnight when Earl was awakened by his grandfather, who had collapsed to the floor, desperately ill. It was not until nearly 5:00 am Sunday when the boy went to the home of a neighbor, Mrs. Alta Farrell, pleading for help. A brother of the stricken man, Charles Shinn, Quapaw, was summoned. Earl explained tearfully why he didn't go earlier for help. "He was so sick I just couldn't leave him." the boy and his grandfather lived alone and were devoted pals. Mr. Shinn, 66, died about three hours after he was taken to Miami Baptist hospital, apparently the victim of a stroke. He had lived in the Picher-Quapaw area since 1916, when he left Joplin Missouri to work in the mining field. Other survivors are a son, William Arthur Shinn, Paramount California; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Arlene Riggs, Kansas City Missouri; his mother, Mrs. Lillie Shinn, Seneca Missouri; two brothers, Charles Shinn, Quapaw, and Henry Shinn, Commerce Oklahoma; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Conner of Sacramento California, Mrs. June Luther and Mrs. Bessie Mills, both of Seneca Missouri Rt. 1, and six other grandchildren. Arrangements for final rites will be announced by the Paul Thomas funeral home of Picher Oklahoma.
