age 79, of 7171 Southeast Center, Baxter Springs Kansas, died at 2:46 pm, Sunday Jan 14, 2001 at Spring Valley Nursing Center, following an illness. Mr. Rowland was born Jun 2, 1921, at Galena Kansas. His parents were James A. Rowland and Rachel Vaughn Rowland. He was a Cherokee Indian offspring. He had lived in this area all of his life. He worked a number of years as a lead and zinc miner. He retired from the Jayhawk Chemical Plant, Riverton Kansas in 1980. He. was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Lowell Kansas Friends Church. He was married to Wanda Coyle, Aug 1, 1940, at Columbus Kansas. She survives. Additional survivors include two sons, John A. Rowland, Riverton, and Jimmie K. Rowland, Joplin Missouri; one sister, Mamie Pake, Albuquerque New Mexico; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 16, at Derfelt funera1 home, Galena. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, January 17, at the funeral home. Rev. C. K. Brown will officiate. Elmer King- fisher will conduct an Indian burial ceremony. The Northeast Oklahoma Veterans funeral detail will provide military graveside honors. Pallbearers will be Jason Rowland, Drew Weaver, Hal Weaver, Mike Gibson, Joe Bill Langford and Larry Evans. Burial will be in Quaker Valley cemetery, Riverton Kansas.
