age 27, of Miami, died at a Long Beach California, early today of injuries he received Tuesday afternoon while swimming off the Long Beach shoreline. According to information given relatives here, Rhoades suffered a broken neck while diving into a "breaker." the pressure of the rolling water was believed to have resulted in the fracture, a friend said. Rhoades, who had been employed in the mining field until several weeks ago, had gone to California for a visit. He was graduated from Miami high school in 1930. During his high school days, he was active in athletics, receiving recognition for his play in both football and basketball on Miami War Dog teams. Rhoades is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Rhoades of Miami; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Booth of Indianola Iowa; Mrs. Nancy Randall of Miami and Miss Ila Rhoades of the home; and one brother, Ralph Rhoades, who resides in Asia, in the Persian Gulf territory. The body will be returned to Miami for burial. It was learned at the Cooper undertaking company.
