Poor, George
Abstract Data
retired hard rock lead and zinc miner and a Commerce Oklahoma resident for many years, succumbed late Tuesday to a gunshot wound which investigating officers said was self-inflicted. County attorney Bob Reynolds said Poor, 67, apparently placed the muzzle of a double barreled .12 gauge shotgun against his head and pulled both triggers. The shooting occurred about 5 o'clock at a dumping grounds four blocks from Poor's home, at 216 North River Street, Commerce. The victim died at Miami Baptist hospital about six hours later. Reynolds quoted relatives as saying Poor had been despondent over poor health. Three notes were found at the Poor residence. They dealt primarily with disposition of the victim's personal affects and with arrangements for burial, Reynolds said. Assisting with the investigation were undersheriff George Moore and Commerce Police chief Aubert Sidwell. Poor, who for several years was employed by the Beck Mining Company, is survived by a son, Eugene Poor, of Baxter Springs Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Gibson and Mrs. Rosmary Hurst, both of Commerce, and seven grandchildren. Final rites will be held at 1 pm Friday in the chapel of the Mitchelson funeral home at Commerce. Max Hickerson, pastor of the first Christian church, will officiate. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery at Miami.
