Abstract Data

Nicholson of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company told of his mining experiences in Alaska to an interested group of safety men at the regular weekly meeting of the group in the offices of the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producer offices last Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Nicholson explained conditions in Alaska that were unfamiliar to local mining men. He was a sourdough miner there for three years and said that his company worked profitably mines that were yielding ore with only 85 cents worth of metal to the ton of dirt.

The hopper and derrick adjoining the Black Eagle Mill of the Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company, located northwest of Treece Kansas, were razed by flames of undetermined origin early today. The mill, of 50 ton capacity, was not damaged. C. W. Nicholson, who directs operations of the mill, said he could not give any estimate as to the loss incurred by the fire. He said that Picher Oklahoma and Treece Kansas firemen battled the flames, which broke out about 1 am. The firemen finally controlled the spread of the fire about dawn. Nicholson said he did not know the origin of the fire. The Black-Eagle property was formerly owned by the Mary M. Mining Company, which sold out its holdings last winter to the Eagle-Picher Company.
