general superintendent of the Oklahoma properties of the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company, who was injured early Thursday morning in a motor car accident on the Commerce highway, was reported resting well today at his home, 126 G Street northwest. Whether he was injured internally has not been determined. Physicians said it was possible internal injuries might show up in three or four days. Thomas Reece, who lives on the highway, driver of the car which struck that in which Mr. Newton and Joe Breeden, superintendent of the Commerce Company's Blue Bonnet Mine, were riding, was charged with drunken driving in a complaint filed today by A. L. Commons, county attorney. Reece was arrested shortly after the accident by Sam Darnell, deputy sheriff.

John W. Newton, one of the best known and most beloved members of Tri-State mining fraternity, died at 12:20 o'clock this morning at his home, 126 G Street northwest, after a prolonged illness. Death resulted from heart trouble, which was aggravated by an attack of influenza last spring. He was 63 years old. Mr. Newton, at the time of his death, was manager of the mining lands and leases department of the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company, an organization with which he had been associated for the last 26 years. In addition, he was president of the Picher Oklahoma State bank and until weakened by illness had been active in other mining enterprises, philanthropic movements and church affairs. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie Newton; one son, Lloyd Newton of Miami; one grandchild, Carolyn Newton of Miami Oklahoma and one sister, Mrs. Vida Kersey of Joplin Missouri. Mr. Newton was born Sep 24, 1873, on the family homestead near Neosho Missouri also the birthplace of his mother. The family moved to Joplin Missouri1876, and he resided there until he came to the Oklahoma zinc and lead mining fields. Mr. Newton first engaged in prospecting and drilling in the Missouri field, then became superintendent of the Herold Mining Company of Joplin. Later, from 1908 to 1915, he was superintendent of the Kramer mines near Galena Kansas in the Missouri field. In 1915 Mr. Newton was employed by the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company to take charge of the Beaver Mine on the John Beaver land at Cardin Oklahoma. He lived at Cardin near the scene of his work for several years, then acquired residential property in Miami and moved here with his family. For several years, Mr. Newton was a director of the American Mining Congress. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, a member of the Masonic Blue lodge of Commerce Oklahoma, a Scottish Rite Mason, member of the Miami commandery, Knights Templar, and of the Royal Select Masters, a Masonic organization of Jasper county Missouri. He always was active in church work, having been for several years a member of the official board of the First Christian church of Joplin. He helped organize and build the Christian church of Cardin, and since coming to Miami had been a member of the First Christian church, serving part of the time on that church's official board...The Cooper funeral home is in charge

Funeral services for John W. Newton, who died at his home Friday morning, will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the First Christian church. The Rev. J. O. Michael of Springfield Missouri, former pastor of the local church, will officiate. Music will be furnished by the church choir with Mrs. L. B. Pursley at the organ. Mr. Newton was a member of the official board of the church. Active pallbearers will be R. J. Tuthill, J. H. Taylor, Clyde Powell of Galena Kansas, Ralph Chambers, M. D. Hubbell, and John Horn. Honorary pallbearers will be J. A. Robinson, C. M. Harvey, Jr., Claude Holden, A. N. Christianson, Henry Duffee, Ernest Moran, George Stein and Melvin Hutts. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery, Miami Oklahoma, under the direction of the Cooper funeral home.

Note: Cooper funeral record show that John Wesley Newton was born in Missouri on Sep 24, 1873 and died Nov 20, 1936 It is with heavy hearts that mining men of the district will attend funeral services for John W. Newton of Miami, prominent in mining and Masonic circles of the district, which will be held this afternoon in Miami. Mr. Newton had played so active a part in the mining industry that there was probably none here who had a wider acquaintance than he. He had been associated with the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company for 21 years. He had entered the mining game as a pioneer and his friendships had grown with the industry in this field. The entire district has lost a real miner, a church and civic worker and a true friend.
