McGhee, Raymond
Abstract Data
The body of Raymond McGhee, who was shot and killed at Picher Oklahoma, Saturday night by his friend and working companion, Willis Short, will be shipped to Eldorado Illinois for burial. No trace has been found of the man who did the shooting. He is believed to have escaped in a red-wheeled Ford car, stolen a few minutes after the tragedy. A letter found in the room occupied by McGhee and Short, gave the information through which McGhee's relatives were located. An aunt in Eldorado wrote asking him to visit her before he was called, into the army, as he had written that he expected to be. A telegram asking what disposal to make of the body was sent by officers and instructions were given to forward the remains to Eldorado. McGhee and Short had been companions for some time, it is said. They worked in the same mine and lived in the same house. McGhee was machine man and Short his dummy. The shooting was the result of an argument during a sordid evening; according to the officers. Two other men, known to have been in the house escaped. "They were friends" was 16 year old Mrs. Short, who was taken in charge with Hazel Card and M. Sullivan Saturday night. "They worked in the same mine and lived in the same house." Mrs. Short was not in the room, she said, when the shooting occurred. From what can be learned through the officers, who made an investigation of the affair, Short and McGhee received a supply of whiskey Saturday. They were at the house with three other men, drinking and gambling. Short and McGhee became involved in a dispute about who won on a play, which was followed by the killing.
