McCullough, Pete

Abstract Data

60 years old, one of the pioneer residents of Miami and for many years engaged in various enterprises in this vicinity, died at 10 o'clock Friday morning in a hospital at Shawnee Oklahoma. He had been confined in the hospital since last September. McCullough was in the lumber business with George Bigham in Miami 30 years ago. Later he became interested in the lead and zinc industry and was affiliated with C. P. Williams, Sam Sullivan and Ed Ballard in operating the old Prairie Mine at Commerce Oklahoma. The Prairie Mine was one of the first lead and zinc mines to operate in northeastern Oklahoma. Later McCullough moved to a farm near Miami and then returned in 1914 to operate the old Quality Bakery until 1918. Then he put in a grocery store on East Central avenue, Miami, remaining in that business for several years. His last business venture was the operation of a filling station near the fairgounds. While there he received much publicity as the central figure in several holdups and for his ability in frustrating the bandits. On several occasions he was beaten severely by bandits who sought to rob him of his money, but failed. McCullough managed the filling station until three years ago, when ill health forced him to retire from an active business. He is survived by two sons, Rex J. McCullough of Tulsa Oklahoma and W. P. Pete' McCullough of Miami; three daughters, Mrs. Winnie D. Johnson of Phoenix Arizona, Miss Gladys McCullough of New York City and Mrs. Frank Martin of Perry; one sister, Mrs. Jim Manfield of Rogers Arkansas, and one brother, Joe McCullough of Piel Washington. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Christian church. The Rev. James O. Michael will officiate. Pallbearers will be Ed Ballard, Claude Williams, Sam McCoy, Dr. W. B. Smith, Elmer Gibham and Frank Roper. Burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery, Miami, under the direction of the Cooper undertaking company, Miami.
