Mantle, Elven C. "Mutt"
Abstract Data
father of the New York Yankee Mickey Mantle, was en route to the Mayo clinic at Rochester Minnesota, today for examination of a back injury. The elder Mantle left by car Sunday with his son and the latter's bride, Merlyn Mantle. Mutt' Mantle, ground boss for Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting's Blue Goose Mine, received a wrenched back in an unusual mishap during the 1951 World Series. In New York to watch son Mickey Mantle perform against the Giants, Mutt accompanied the athlete to a hospital after the latter wrenched his knee in the second series game. Assisting Mickey up the hospital steps, Mr. Mantle lost his balance and suffered a back injury which also sent him to the hospital. In recent weeks, the elder Mantle has complained more of pain in the region of the injury. He is expected to return this week-end, his wife, said. Meanwhile, Mickey Mantle had received his 1952 contract from the Yankees. His mother and the out-fielder intended to "study it over" on his trip to Minnesota. She disclosed no details.
