The examining officer express admiration of the young man's outstanding physical make-up and inquired of him what kind of work he had been doing. Long told him he was an "M.D." whereupon the officer was said to have inquired with a still greater degree of curiosity as to what that was. To this inquiry young Long replied "That's a mule driver," following which the examining officer commented that he wished they had many more mule drivers of that kind for service in Uncle Sam's army. The youth was an outstanding member of the Picher High School football team both last year and the previous season, playing the position of guard. Both years he achieved the distinction of being selected by coaches of the district as a member of the first team of the Lucky Seven conference selection.
