age 88, of Joplin Missouri, passed away at 4:25 pm Sunday, Jun 4, 2000 at Freeman hospital West Emergency room, Joplin, after a short illness. Born May 19, 1912 in Newton county Missouri, he was the son of Charley Lewis and Lucy Elkins Lewis and lived in Joplin since 1948. A miner in his early life, he was a driver the U.S. Postal Service and was surveyor for Camp Crowder during World War II. He was a foreman at Safeway Bakery and retired from Independent Gravel Company in 1977. He attended First Gospel Workers church. His first wife, Lillian Coffman Lewis, preceded him in death in 1963. On Aug 8, 1965, he married Nola Jean Norman at Baxter Springs Kansas. She preceded him in death on Apr 26, 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Twyla McDermont of Carl Junction; a step-son, Leonard Moffett of Joplin Missouri; a sister, Opal Bryant of Miami Oklahoma; two brothers, Lester Lewis, Neosho Missouri, Joseph Calvin Lewis of Los Cruces New Mexico; two grandchildren, Hail McDermont and Lucas McDermont. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday at Parker Mortuary with Rev. Leonard Moffett officiating. The family will received friends following the services until 2:30 pm at the mortuary. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 pm Saturday at Hazel Green cemetery near Neosho. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
