Landis, John E. "Jack"
Abstract Data
was another prominent man associated with the mining industry who has been taken from our ranks within the last week. Only those who attended his funeral in Baxter Springs Kansas Wednesday afternoon can realize to the fullest extent the friendships he had made and the esteem and respect with which his memory will be kept alive in the hearts of those who knew him. He was active in Masonic works as well as in mining circles and in the Christian church. He was president of the Goodfellows club at Picher Oklahoma at the time of his death. This club entertains the under privileged children of the Picher Oklahoma district with a Christmas party each year. Arthur C. Babb was vice- president of the club at the time of his death. The work of these two men will be greatly missed by the club and their pleasant personalities will be missed by the children of Picher as they gather this year for their party; for these children have looked to the two as a sort of "alias Santa Claus." Mr. Landis entered business in Picher 20 years ago as manager of a boiler shop for A. E. Maitland of Joplin Missouri, bought a boiler works on the present site of the Landis Steel Construction company and Landis later bought out Dawes and organized the Oklahoma Boiler and Sheet Metal Works. This firm went out of existence a year ago and in December of 1935, Landis organized the Landis Steel Construction Corporation, taking over what was formerly the assets of the Oklahoma Boiler and Sheet Metal Works. Miles B. Landis will succeed his father as secretary-treasurer and general manager of the Landis Steel Construction corporation. The Landis family has lost a kind and considerate husband and father, the mining men of the district have lost a real friend, the Masonic lodge has lost a loyal member, the children of Picher have lost a god-father, and together we grieve.
