of Baxter Springs Kansas, died Saturday, Aug 19, 2000, at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, Joplin Missouri. He was 76. Mr. Johnston was born Feb 25, 1924, at Hockerville Oklahoma to Sherman Johnson and Hazel Brandon Johnston. He had lived in Baxter Springs since 1981. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He worked as a miner for more than 30 years before retiring and working for Doan Products for 18 years. He was a member of Treece Kansas Baptist Church. He married Verla Turner on Feb 6, 1978, at Miami. She survives, of the home. Survivors include six sons, Dennis Johnston, Oak Grove Missouri, Robert Johnston of, Craig, Colorado, Sidney Mathews, Wagoner Oklahoma, Michell Mathews, Galena Kansas, Joseph Mathews, Rosewell North Carolina, and Ricky Mathews, Miller Missouri; two daughters, Joyce Barton and Donna Lamb, both of Baxter Springs; two sisters, Velma Wall, Clovis New Mexico, and Colleen Baird, Treece; 31 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Greenlee. The graveside service is 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Greenlawn cemetery, northwest of Picher Oklahoma and Treece Kansas, with the Rev. Wesley Woolcock officiating. Pallbearers are Johnny Greenlee, Mike Johnston, Jerry Johnston, Chad Barton, Dusten Busby, Nathan Mathews, Michael Lamb, Derek Mathews, and Ricky Mathews. Military rites will be performed by the NEO Veterans Funeral Detail. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the Paul Thomas funeral home, Picher.
