James, Francis
Abstract Data
The swift current of the Spring River claimed two lives Sunday afternoon at a point near the Twin Bridges, east of Miami, when James A. Logan, 39 years old, a hard rock lead and zinc miner of Picher Oklahoma, went to the rescue of Francis James, 18, of Fairland Oklahoma, and both were drowned. James, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Price James of Fairland, a few minutes before had swum across the river with his little sister on his back. After a short rest he started back with her. The swift current apparently exhausted the youth and he shouted for help. Logan, who was fishing nearby, jumped into the stream and went to the assistance of James and his sister. He succeeded in bringing the girl to the bank and then went back after the boy. Whether James clinched his rescuer or whether the strong current overtaxed Logan could not be learned. Both drowned after Logan had reached the youth and had started to swim ashore with him. Their bodies were recovered within a half hour and artificial respiration given them without result. The funeral of the young Francis James will be at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Fairland Baptist church. Burial will be in the Fairland cemetery. Logan was an ex-service man. He leaves his parents, who live at Plattsville Wisconsin, and several brothers and sisters. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. D. W. Brashear, pastor of the First Methodist church of Picher, this afternoon at the chapel of the Green undertaking company at Picher. The Picher post of the American Legion was in charge. Burial Sep 12, 1927, will be at Plattsville.
