Irwin, "Boots"
Abstract Data
A Tulsa-Quapaw Mine derrick, located on a property operated by the Mid-Continent Lead and Zinc company northwest of Picher Oklahoma and near Treece Kansas, was badly damaged by fire. Loss roughly estimated at $5,000. The flames originated from an explosion of an air heater in the derrick. The wooden structure, about 60 feet in height, caught ablaze about 7:30 am shortly before the day crew of about 55 men reported for work. Although the derrick was badly damaged, the hopper was not seriously impaired by the blaze. Boots Irwin, superintendent of the property, said he could not determine immediately the loss. It was learned that the derrick will have to be rebuilt.
