April 16 Despondent over ill health, George Haggerty of Picher Oklahoma, 64 years old, ended his life last night by shooting himself in the head at his home 209? East Second Street. The shooting occurred shortly before 7 o'clock. Haggerty died an hour later at Picher hospital, where he was taken in an ambulance of the Green undertaking company following the shooting. A .38 caliber revolver was used. The bullet penetrated the skull above the right eye. Haggerty was reported as having stated on several occasions that he intended to kill himself. He had been in failing health for some time and the last several weeks his condition had gradually grown worse. There was no witness to the shooting. A step- daughter, Mrs. Hazel Claxton, was in another room of the house when Haggerty fired the fatal shot. She immediately ran into his bedroom and found him lying in bed with the revolver clutched in his hand and in an unconscious condition. He had been a resident of Picher the last 16 years. Mr. Haggerty before moving to this area was a chief at the Brown Palace in Denver, Colorado, and also a chief in Bartlesville Oklahoma. In Picher he worked as a cook and for a short time he worked in the mines. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Celia Haggerty, and three step-children, Mrs. Hazel Claxton, Mrs. Jeneva Earp and Mrs. Mary Hulvey, all of Picher. He is also survived by two little step-granddaughters, Mary Claxton and Shirley Earp. Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of the Green undertaking company at 10 tomorrow morning. The Rev. D. W. Brashear, pastor of the First Methodist church will officiate and burial will be in G.A.R. cemetery at Miami.
