Gaines, 64 years old, prominent in mining operations of the Tri-State district, died at 11:30 o'clock last night at his home southeast of Picher Oklahoma following an illness of eight months. Mr. Gaines had been confined to his bed the last five months. Mr. Gaines was born at Mishawaka Indiana, Oct 12, 1869, where he resided until 17 years old. In leaving Indiana, Mr. Gaines went to Colorado, where he engaged in the gold and silver mining industry with profitable results. In 1913 Mr. Gaines left Colorado and settled at Galena Kansas where he had the Diplomat Mine. [Interest: West Seventh Street in Galena Kansas was closed to traffic on Jan 2, 1913. Problems with mine drifts, which undercut the Street, had resulted in cave- ins. The Street was ruled unsafe, and the weakest points were filled with gravel.] In the operation of this mine he was credited with two achievements, one being operation of the first electric equipped mine of the Tri-State district and the other being the first big tonnage of the district. Four years later he came to Picher and became associated with the Kanok Metals company as operator of the Premier Mine on South Main Street. Six years later he acquired a lease on the tract of land southeast of Picher, where he developed several paying mines under control of the New Chicago Mine corporation, of which he was president. He home was on this tract of land. Mr. Gaines was president of the former Bank of Picher a number of years. He was a member of the Quapaw Masonic lodge. Surveying are his wife, Mrs. Ellen G. Gaines; a son, J. H. Gaines, Jr. of Picher; his mother, Mrs. J. H. Gaines of Mishawaka Indiana; two sisters, Mrs. H. L. Pike of Fort Thomas Kentucky, and Mrs. Otis Replogle of Mishawakea, and two brothers Charles H. Gaines of Warika Oklahoma, and William Oliver Gaines of LaJolla California.
