Darnell, Elbert

Abstract Data

brakeman for the Northeast Oklahoma Railroad, was injured dangerously about 8 this morning when he was crushed beneath the wheels of a car in the railroad yards in the north part of Miami. The wheels passed over his right leg and left arm, and his left leg was bruised severely. The injured man was taken in an ambulance to Miami Baptist hospital, where efforts were being made today to save his life without amputating the crushed limbs. It had not been determined at noon whether amputation would be necessary. Physicians said they hoped to save both limbs. Details of the accident could not be learned. Henry Waeckerle, chief dispatcher for the railroad company, who was at the scene of the accident shortly after it happened, said he did not know whether Darnell slipped and fell under the car or whether he was struck by the car and knocked under the wheels. Darnell is married and lives at 331 F Street northeast, Miami. He was been in the employ of the railroad company several years. Nearly two years ago Darnell's brother, Marvin Darnell, 25, was killed instantly when struck by a Frisco passenger train. The accident, which occurred Jan 2, 1925, was at a point about 300 yards west of the Neosho River bridge. The man, who was lying on the tracks, was believed to have suffered a "sin spell" while walking along the right-of-way, on his way to the home of relatives, southwest of Miami.
