Hickory Grove Community near Grove Oklahoma, died Wednesday, Oct 23, 1996, at his home after a long illness. He was 68. Mr. Cox was born Jul 1, 1928, at Hickory Grove to Layman Cox and Lillie Jones Cox. He went to work in the Picher Oklahoma mines at the age of 15 to support his family after his father's death. Mr. Cox was a farmer and rancher. He drove bus number four for the Grove Public schools for 22 years. He also ran Sailboat Bridge service station for eight years. He was a founder, board member and fireman for the Hickory Grove Fire Department and a board member of the Hickory Grove Community Center. He was a member of the Hickory Grove Church of God. Mr. Cox served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Fairland Oklahoma American Legion Post. He married Wanda Burton on Feb 18, 1956, in Vinita Oklahoma. She survives, of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, James Cox and his wife Michele Cox, Hickory Grove, and Steve Cox and his wife Bonnie Cox, Jay Oklahoma; three daughters, Sharon Cox, JoAnn Cox and Sherry Cox, of the home; two sisters, Betty Maples and her husband Joe Maples, Highlandville Missouri, and Lenora Tatum and her husband Joe Tatum, Clever Missouri; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 pm, Saturday, Oct 23, at the Hickory Grove community Center with Ron Cross and Jim Lemaster officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove cemetery. The Hickory Grove Fire Department will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 7 pm tonight. Services are under the direction of the Worley-Luginbuel funeral home, Grove.
