Joplin Missouri, died Saturday morning, Feb 3, 2001, in Spartanburg South Carolina, after a long illness. He was 90. Mr. Chubb was born Jul 18, 1910, in Baxter Springs Kansas, to Mr. and Mrs. Alva Chubb. He graduated from Baxter Springs High School, Baker University and earned a master s degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1933. He returned to Joplin in 1933. He worked with Eagle-Picher Company, Joplin, for 45 years, becoming vice- president and general manager of Eagle-Picher s electronics division. He was recognized as one of the world s leading experts on battery technology. He was made responsible for the research and development of special military batteries after Eagle-Picher received its first battery contract with the U.S. Army in 1944. In 1952 he was named manager of the battery operation when it was established as a separate operation known as the Couples Division. As the division developed and produced special batteries for the space and defense mission, Mr. Chubb was named general manager and vice president at Eagle-Picher. Numerous patents related to new battery technology were issued in his name. He married Agnes Pfaff from Bangor Maine on Jan 31, 1933. She preceded him in death on Oct 19, 1979. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Joan Montgomery, of Spartanburg. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Francis Chubb and Wiletta Chubb; and two brothers, James Chubb and Leonard Chubb. Survivors include a son, Melvin Chubb Jr., Melbourne Florida; three grandchildren, Kristy Chubb, Rochester New York, Brandon Chubb, Los Angeles California, and Courtney Chubb, Nairobi Kenya; and three great- grandchildren. Paul Thomas funeral home, Picher Oklahoma. Burial is in Greenlawn cemetery in Kansas, northwest of Picher Oklahoma and Treece Kansas.
