Canter, Robert

Abstract Data

a hard rock lead and zinc ground foreman at the Big Jim Mine, ended his life this morning about 1 at the Connell Hotel, Picher Oklahoma, by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. The bullet penetrated just above the right ear and ranged downward, coming out below the left ear. He died Oct 30, 1924, age 46, almost instantly. Canter was well known throughout the Picher mining district and his act came as a great surprise to his closest friends. They can advance no reason for the suicide. Canter and his family occupied apartments at the local hotel, his family having come here about six weeks ago from Carterville Missouri. Several friends of Canter were seated in the hotel lobby when he entered. They noted nothing peculiar about his actions. He called at the desk, requesting his 32-caliber revolver, which he always left at the hotel office. Nothing was thought of this request as he frequently called for the weapon. Dr. W. H. Black was at Canter's side within a few moments following the shooting, but the miner was dead. Canter had been engaged in mining work in the Picher district the past six years. Up to three weeks ago he was employed as ground foreman by the Golden Rod Mine No. 8. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Canter, and six children. The children are Miss Edna Canter of St. Louis Missouri, Mrs. Ethel Pierce of Tulsa Oklahoma and Aveline Canter, Bobbie Canter, Albretta Canter and Norman Canter of Picher. The body is at the Todd undertaking parlors. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
