Burke, Gilbert M.

Abstract Data

30 years old, well known mining man of the Tri-State district, was found dead in bed in his room at the Alberta Lee apartments, 315 South Connell avenue, Picher Oklahoma, shortly after 10 o'clock Saturday night. Physicians examining the body said the man had been dead two to four hours and apparently died from a heart attack or a paralytic stroke. Burke's death was discovered by Gus Cobbs, a friend who called at the apartment to learn why Burke had not been seen during the day. The door of the room was found locked and Cobbs received no response when he called to Burke. Entrance was gained with a pass key obtained from an apartment attendant. Burke's lifeless body was found in bed clad in pajamas and indicating that death had come while he was asleep. Burke was employed for several years as assistant general superintendent by the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company. At the time of his death he was associated with F. W. "Mike" Evans in the Evans-Burke Mining Company in the Picher field. He formerly lived in Joplin Missouri and Miami, first locating in Joplin in 1906. His wife died several years ago in Miami. Burke originally came from New York state. He was graduated from a mining engineering school in Michigan, soon after which he engaged in mining work near Joplin. All his relatives are said to live in the East. Definite information was not available today regarding his relatives, but it is understood he is survived by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at the All Saints' Episcopal church in Miami at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with the Rev. Louis Denninghoff officiating. Pallbearers will be F. H. Gartung, F. W. Evans, George Washburn, Fred Snow, Leroy Clayton and Clyde Robinson. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery at Webb City Missouri, under direction of the Todd undertaking company.
