Abstract Data

born in Missouri, who as a 17 year old boy settled in Ottawa county, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, 75 years ago after driving a herd of cattle from northern Missouri to what now is Fairland Oklahoma, died Aug 8, 1956, age 92, in a rest home Thursday. A former ore driller, Mr. Brown was instrumental in the uncovering of zinc and lead deposits in the early days of the district mining field. He had spent only two years outside Oklahoma since moving to Ottawa county in 1881. He drilled for ore in Wyoming and Kentucky in 1920 and 1921. After settling south of Fairland Indian Territory Oklahoma, in 1881, Brown plowed and harrowed ground for farmers for several years. He recalled being paid 50 cents for a 12 hour day's work. He moved to Afton Indian Territory Oklahoma, where he drilled many of the town's water wells in the 1890s and later was active in the feed and livery business there before he moved to a farm nine miles southwest of Miami. His Tri-State mining activity started soon after he moved his family to Miami in 1916. The pioneer farmer and driller had lived in retirement for the past 20 years. Survivors include a son, Jess Brown, Miami; four daughters, Mrs. Addie Doan and Mrs. Stella Scarbrough, both of Groveport, Mrs. Effie Monyhan, Miami, and Mrs. Lizzie Crockett, Alhambra, California, 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements for services and burial will be announced by the Cooper funeral home.
