Beaver, Albert

Abstract Data

A quarrel, which is alleged to have arisen over the payment of a dollar debt, has placed Albert Beaver, 22, in the hospital with small chances for recovery and "Poley" Provance, 43, in the Ottawa county Oklahoma jail. Provance was arrested Wednesday evening at Picher Oklahoma following the quarrel. According to the Picher police officials, Provance, who is hoistman in a mine near Picher, approached Beaver Wednesday evening and asked for the payment of $1 which he had loaned Beaver several days ago. The men have had words over the affair before and Provance is alleged to have remarked that he "would get more than a dollar out of his hide." According to Beaver, Provance assailed him about 20 feet from the southeast corner of Third and Main Street. Beaver had recently been sick and started to run from Provance when he saw a knife in his hands. Provance pursued him and is said to have stabbed him in the abdomen. Beaver ran south, holding his abdomen. Porvance pursued for over a half block, after which Beaver walked east on Fourth Street to the Hocker undertaking company, three blocks from where he was stabbed. Hocker's ambulance took him to the American hospital, where he was sent to the operating room at 7:15 o'clock, about 20 minutes after he was stabbed. Beaver left a trail of blood on the sidewalk along which he walked. Beaver is a hard rock lead and zinc miner and worked as machine man's helper at the Oko Mine Wednesday. He is 23 years old and resides with his father, Thomas P. Beaver and sister, Mrs. Jessie Smith, at 412 Emily Street, Picher. He is said to have a wife living in Picher from whom he was recently separated. The wife was formerly Miss Ella Miller. Provance has spent several years as a hard rock lead and zinc miner in this district. He had been making his home for the last year at the Blue Goose rooming house, 110 Picher Street. He is thought to have no relatives except a sister in California. Provance was arrested by Chief of Police W. G. Michael about 20 minutes after the stabbing. Ed Young deputy sheriff, took the prisoner to Miami shortly afterward. Dr. E. Albert Aisenstadt and Dr. J. B. Lanning, who performed the operation, say that Beaver has a fighting chance to live. The incision was an angular cut about three inches long. The stomach was penetrated.
