67 years old, member of the city council and resident of Baxter Springs Kansas for 30 years and one who has been reputed to have been more of a factor in the development of virgin land than any other man in the Tri-State mining field, died at 5:20 am today in a Joplin Missouri hospital. He had been confined to the hospital for 15 days. He was born in Iowa, later going to Charlton county Missouri with his parents. He married Mary M. Harr in 1891 and a few years later moved to Oklahoma. He came to Baxter Springs 30 years ago and was a pioneer in the development of the Lincolnville Oklahoma, Commerce Oklahoma and the Cardin and Picher Oklahoma mining lands. Mr. Barnes was one of the chief developers of mineral deposits near Baxter Springs. He held many interest such as a driller and land owner in these mineral lands. While in development work at Picher and Cardin, he was associated with O. J. McConnell. Later he became a free lancer. He started to develop properties, among which are the Huttig [Brewster], Hartley-Chanute and Ballard interests. He was interested in civic affairs at Baxter for a number of years and as a city councilman took an active part in projects along improvement lines, including the local water system and a Street improvements. He was a member of several lodges, and the Presbyterian church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Barnes; two sons, R. D. Barnes and R. B. Barnes; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Wagoner, Mrs. Rosa Page and Mrs. Tulsa Shafter, all of Baxter Springs; 10 grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Neil Harr of Miami, Mrs. Ernest Wofford of Quapaw Oklahoma and Mrs. Ernest Wofford of Quapaw Oklahoma and Mrs. Glen Oren of Joplin Missouri. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. The Rev. William A. Hubbard of the Methodist church will officiate. Masonic burial rites will also be conducted. Burial will be in the Ozark Memorial park at Joplin.
