Barkley, J. D.
Abstract Data
Described by officers as an innocent bystander in a shotgun shooting incident in Picher Oklahoma early Sunday, J. D. Barkley, 35 year old miner, was recovering from multiple wounds in both legs today. Barkley was released from Miami Baptist hospital Sunday morning, about seven hours after he was allegedly wounded by John Carrey, 35, also of Picher. Carrey, who reportedly "peppered" Barkley with bird shot while attempting to shoot another man in front of a tavern on Second avenue, was arrested by Police Chief Gene Crockett and brought to county jail soon after the shooting. The prisoner had not been charged at noon today.

A charge of assault with a dangerous weapon was filed in county court today against a Picher man, John A. Currey, 35. Currey was arrested soon after another Picher resident, 35 year old J. D. Barkley, was struck in the legs by a shotgun charge early Sunday in front of a Picher tavern. Picher Police chief Gene Crockett, who signed today's complaint, said Barkley was a bystander and that Currey apparently meant to injure another man with whom he had argued inside the tavern shortly before. Crockett identified the believed intended target as Carl McGuire, a hard rock lead and zinc miner, also of Picher. Barkley was hospitalized in Miami but was released later Sunday after receiving treatment.
