Of Baxter Springs Kansas, died Saturday, Nov 6, 1999, at St. John's Medical Center in Joplin Missouri, after a short illness. He was 68. Mr. Akin was born Jan 18, 1931, in Mountain Home Arkansas, to Robert Jess Akin and Minnie Dennison Akin. He had lived in Baxter Springs for the past 15 years, moving there from Kansas City Kansas. He was a retired hard rock lead and zinc miner and farmer. He married Velma Van Hoose, Aug 23, 1954 in Miami, and she survives of the home in Baxter. Also surviving are sons, Russell Robert Akin of Joplin, James Akin of Lockbuie Colorado, and Loy Akin of Picher Oklahoma; three daughters, Shirley Van Hoose of Picher, Delores Dunbar of Picher and Diane Akin of Grove Oklahoma; one sister, Ruth Plank of Excelsior Springs Missouri, 19 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. The funeral service for Mr. Akin is Tuesday, Nov 9, 1999, at 2 pm at the Paul Thomas funeral home in Picher. The Rev. Clyde Stilley will officiate. Interment will be at the Baxter Springs cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Dunbar, Russell Wayne Akin, Gary Dardine, Timmy Dunbar, Donnie Akin, and Donnie Seiber. The family will receive friends Monday, Nov 8, 1999, at the Paul Thomas funeral home of Picher, from 7 to 8 pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas funeral home in Picher.
