died. Well known Indian and a long time resident of Ottawa County Oklahoma, died Saturday, Jul 16, 1927, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oliver Clapp on Sycamore Creek in the eastern part of the county, a few miles sout of Seneca, Missouri. He was 83 years old. Mr. Hodgkiss was a member, by blood, of the Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, coming to the Indian Territory as clerk of the Quapaw Agency in 1890 and serving under Agents Doane, Goldberg, Allen and H. B. Durant. He entered the Indian service at the Pine Ridge agency in South Dakota in January 1880, and served under Supt. J. George Wright, now of the Osage agency of Oklahoma. Well educated and intimately acquainted with all of the older members of the various tribes of the Quapaw Agency, Mr. Hodgkiss was popular among them all. "He was one of the most faithful and efficient clerks in the Indian service, and was so recognized by the Indian Department at Washington," Mr. Durant said today of Mr. Hodgkiss. Mr. Hodgkiss was chief clerk of the Quapaw agency under Major Summers. The agency at that time was four miles west of Seneca. He moved with Mr. Durant when the agency was established at Wyandotte Oklahoma. His wife was a Wyandotte Indian. B. N. O. Walker, late chief clerk of the Quapaw Agency, worked for a time under Mr. Hodgkiss. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Jul 20, 1927, at the family home.
