Windham, John William
Picher Oklahoma, Feb 15. John William Windham, 12 years old, was instantly killed at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning at Third and Alta streets, Picher, by a small ore train used by the Eagle-Picher Lead Company, to transport ore from No. 15 mine to No. 5 mill. The Windham boy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Windham, 419 Ethel street, Picher. According to a neighbor boy who was with young Windham at the time of the fatal accident, the boys had left the Windham home, less than two blocks from the scene of the accident, only a few minutes before for the purpose of ordering coal. It was said that the boy was caught by the train at the intersection of the Mineral Belt railroad as he was attempting to cross the narrow gauge track. Engineer V. L. Harris and fireman Claude Berdue, declared they were pushing a train of eleven empty cars back to the mine at the south when the front car passed over the boy's body, dragging it six feet as the train was stopped. The boy's father was summoned immediately and the body was taken to the morgue of the Todd undertaking company, of Picher to await funeral arrangements, pending word from relatives in Alabama. The body was considerably mangled. Note: One article has W. D. Windham and then W. A. Windham. One place has 419 Ethel street and then South Alta street.
