Mine Fatalities of 50 Years Is Recalled: "Fifty years ago, April 8, 1936, Guy White and Cubert White, cousins, were fatally injured in a rock cave in the Wilbur Mine in Treece Kansas. The two young men started working at an early age in the Tri-State Mining area. Guy White, age 31, was unmarried, while Cubert White, age 29, married with three small children. Their fathers, Ed White and Ira White, brought their families from Missouri to Commerce Oklahoma in 1915. Both men worked underground for ten years and both died from the lung disease that took so many of our loved ones and friends. Three other sons of Ed White spent years in the mines and mills, Jim White, Clifford White and Vernon White. Clifford survives and lives in Plano Texas. This was a way of life for everyone and a means to provide for their families. Some of us were lucky to have other jobs created from the mining industry. We think of the Tri-State area as home no matter where we go and in spite of the tragedies we all endured. Congratulations to Eagle- Picher and other companies at this Reunion. Signed - Faye White Cash, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma."
