Warner, Walter
Age 42
Mary M. Mill
Picher Oklahoma, Jun 22 Walter Warner, 42 years old, of Baxter Springs Kansas, lost his life when he was buried in a chat slide at the Mary M. tailing pile, east of Picher at 6:45 o'clock this morning while preparing to dynamite the tailings. A helper, Jay Alsence of Picher Oklahoma, had a narrow escape from death, being covered to the hips by the avalanche of gravel. Warner was employed as a drag man by the Atlas Milling Company, operating the hard rock lead and zinc tailing mill. While preparing to shoot the tailings only a few minutes before going off shift, the pile suddenly gave way. Warner yelled to his helper to look out for the sliding mass of chat. Alsence was able to get far enough away to miss the greater part of the slide, but Warner, who was a trifle closer was caught and covered to such an extent that one hour and 15 minutes was required to recover his body. Warner had been employed by the Atlas Milling Company for a year. Warner lived at Eighth and Ottawa streets in Baxter Springs Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora Warner; two daughters, Lucille Warner and LaVerl Warner, at home; his mother, Mrs. Martha Warner of Diamond Missouri, and a brother, Clarence Warner, also of Diamond. Warner's body was removed to the parlors of Todd undertaking company, of Picher and later to a Baxter Springs undertaking parlor. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
