Vinegar Hill Mine No. 2

Miami Record Herald · Nov 30 1917 · Pg 3 · Col 3

Frank Stewart, about 25 years old, was instantly killed Friday by a falling ore can while in shaft No. 2, of the Vinegar Hill Mine at Commerce Oklahoma. It seems that the can fell about 200 feet and struck him. He was working with a brother-in-law in the mine, who escaped injury at the time. He leaves a wife, who resides in Picher Oklahoma. The remains were sent to the morgue of Hal Mitchelson, Commerce, from where they were sent to Carthage Missouri Saturday for burial.

The paper changed names several times making it difficult to search by title. Most of the Hard Rock Lead and Zinc Fatalities newspaper clippings are from the personal files of I. D. Hulvey, former powderman in the Picher mine and then owner of the Hulvey Insurance Agency.
