The La Salle Mining Company was named as defendant in a suit for damages filed Tuesday by attorneys for Anne Gertrude Smith, of Picher Oklahoma, over the death of her husband, Joseph Smith.

Smith, according to the suit, was working as machine man in the hard rock lead and zinc mine when a large slab of rock fell on him, killing him instantly. The plaintiff asks that she be awarded $3,200. . Smith, Troy Junior

Black Eagle Mine

Troy Junior Smith, 20, of Treece Kansas, a shoveler at the Black Eagle Mine, northwest of Treece, was killed about 10 am today when a slab of rock fell upon him. The body was removed to the Durnil funeral home. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. It was reported that Smith was killed instantly. Dirt covered his body immediately after the fall of rock. The hard rock lead and zinc miner is survived by his mother, Mrs. Minnie Smith of Treece; two brothers, Elmer Smith of Carlsbad New Mexico, and Doris Smith of Treece, and three sisters, Mrs. John McBride of Treece, Mrs. Dewey Walton of Picher Oklahoma and Mrs. Cora Cuatney of Baxter Springs Kansas.
