Picher Oklahoma, May 12 James Smith, 709 Picher street, was instantly killed and Ed Ferrell, 1013 Crow street, Webb City Missouri, was injured when both miners were struck by a falling slab at the LaSalle Mine, one mile north of Picher, at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Smith was a machine man and Ferrell was helper on the same machine. According to other miners, the men were preparing to move their machine and when they removed the post a slab fell from the roof.

Smith's body was taken to the morgue of the Todd undertaking company, of Picher. He was 49 years old and is survived by his wife in Picher and a brother in Virginia. Funeral arrangements have been delayed pending word from the brother. Ferrell was taken to the Picher hospital, Picher Oklahoma. His condition is not regarded as serious.
