M. K. & T. Mill

Miami Record Herald, Indian Territory · Jul 05 1907

H. M. Shriver, well known in Miami and the Quapaw Agency, was killed at the M. K. & T. Mill, near the Mission Mine last Thursday afternoon at about 4 o'clock. He was operating the ore crusher, or regulating the feed of ore into the breaker, as it is called, and had gone up in the elevator tower to oil some gears and make some miner repairs and it is thought his jumper got caught in the gearing, the machinery being in motion at full speed. In putting out his hand to extricate it, it was caught in the cogs and drew him into the counter shaft. His associates saw his hat fall and heard his cries, but before the engine could be stopped both limbs were broken, his clothing torn to shreds and his bleeding trunk was hurled down on the floor below, where it was impaled on a rod. Death was almost instantaneous. The remains were prepared for burial by a Baxter Springs Kansas undertaking firm, the funeral occurring on Friday at the Peoria graveyard. Mr. Shriver was about 45 or 50 years of age, and leaves a widow and children. He has lived in this agency for a long time having several children buried where his remains were laid. This is the first fatal accident that has occurred in the hard rock lead and zinc Quapaw field since it was opened for operation.
