Stemmer, George
Age 32
Old Abe Mine
Last Sunday night at 9 o'clock while R. C. Northcott was moving his drill from one point to another on the Charles Moll lease of the Mary Buck land, near the Old Abe Mine in the territory south of Baxter Springs Kansas, the boiler exploded, killing George Stemmer almost instantly. Stemmer was guiding the machine at the time of the explosion, and the full force struck him on the head almost decapitating the upper portion. Mr. Northcott, who was firing, received severe injuries on the leg, the knee cap being mashed, and the limb badly scalded from the knee down. The cause of the explosion, like all others, is a mystery. Mr. Northcott informed a reporter there was plenty of water in the boiler, and that there were only 80 pounds of steam where he has had a pressure of 130 pounds.
George Stemmer was 32 years of age and a hard working man and was well liked by all who knew him. He has lived in Miami Oklahoma and Quapaw Oklahoma the past 6 years, but was formerly from Glenville, Bolinger county, Missouri, where the remains were shipped for interment. He leaves a two weeks wedded wife to mourn his sad demise, and in tears she expressed her thanks to the kind hearted miners who did all in their power to lighten her grief.
