Miner Rings His Own Death Signal. Picher Oklahoma, Oct 4 Edward Shannon, 46 years old, 404 North Joplin street, Joplin Missouri, was instantly killed about 8 o'clock this morning at the Blue Diamond Mine when his head struck against the cribbing of the shaft as he was being hoisted from the mine. Shannon was employed as a track man. He was said to have told fellow workmen he was going "on top" to have a new handle put in the track hammer he was using. In signaling the hoisterman to pull the can to the top, witnesses said, Shannon only rang one bell, a signal that a can of dirt was coming up. Cans of dirt are hoisted with much more speed and less precaution that when a man is in the can. Shannon's skull was crushed, indicting death was due to his head striking against the side of the shaft when the can bumped. No funeral arrangements have been made. The body is at the morgue of the Todd undertaking company, of Picher. Shannon was married. No information is available here, regarding relatives surviving besides his wife.
