Kansas State Penitentiary Coal Mine

Picher Oklahoma, Aug 3-- Peter Russell, 67 years old, prominent Kansas coal mine operator, died at his home in Lansing Kansas, at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, according to information received by Picher relatives. Mr. Russell was superintendent of the coal mine at the Kansas state penitentiary, previously having been head of the Peter Russell Coal Company at West Mineral Kansas. While inspecting the prison mine last January, Mr. Russell was struck on the head by a falling boulder. He never fully recovered from this injury.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Russell; three sons, William Russell, cashier of the Treece State Bank at Treece Kansas; Dr. Richard Russell of Picher Oklahoma, physician for the Evans-Wallower Mining Company; and Peter Russell, Jr., at home; two daughters, Mrs. E. J. Colvin of Arcadia Oklahoma, and Mrs. John Pilkington of West Mineral; three brothers, Tom Russell of Denver Colorado, Charles Russell of Springfield Illinois, and George Russell of Picher Oklahoma, and one sister, Mrs. R. S. Jones of Taylor-ville Illinois.

The body will arrive in Picher Sunday morning to be prepared for burial by the Todd undertaking company, of Picher. It will be taken to West Mineral at 1 Sunday afternoon to lie in state for 24 hours. Funeral services will be held there at 2 Monday afternoon. Burial will be in the Holland Park cemetery at Pittsburg Kansas.
