Wilbur Mine
Picher Oklahoma, Jan 11 Glen Rehkop, 19 years old, Cardin Oklahoma, was injured fatally today when buried beneath an avalanche of rock and dirt at the Wilbur Mine, one-half mile west of Treece Kansas, where he was employed as a machine man's helper. The body was not recovered until nearly 30 minutes after the slide occurred. When found, Rehkop was unconscious. An ambulance took the youth to Miami Baptist hospital, where he died 20 minutes after reaching the hospital.
John Welty, drill runner, was slightly injured, receiving minor cuts and bruises. He was knocked down the "stope" by the falling earth and rock. The slide occurred shortly after 8 o'clock. Loose ground in the drift in which the men were working was believed responsible. They had just carried the drill up to the "stope" to set it up when the avalanche of earth broke loose. Physicians said Rehkop's death was caused by a fractured skull and internal injuries. Rehkop had been employed at mines of the Commerce Mining and Royalty Company for a year. He was a nephew of Sam Schrum, ground boss at the Wilbur Mine, a property of the company, and lived at his uncle's home at Cardin Oklahoma. The youth came here from Flat River Missouri, where his mother lives. Funeral arrangements are awaiting the arrival of his mother. The body is at the Todd undertaking company, of Picher.
