Walter Ray, 39 Years old, 2530 Picher avenue, was fatally injured about 4:30 o'clock this morning at the Galena Kansas smelter of the Eagle Picher Lead Company when a small plant truck he was driving was accidentally backed into a steel column, inflicting crushing injuries to his right leg above the knee. Ray was taken in a Clark ambulance to St. John's hospital at Joplin Missouri shortly after 5 o'clock and died there at 10:10 o'clock. Death was caused by shock and the loss of blood. His leg was nearly torn off. The Joplin man was employed as a truck driver at the plant. The driver's seat on the small electric plant trucks is at the rear of the machine. Ray was seated there operating the truck, when it was suddenly backed into the column. His leg was caught between the truck body and the steel upright. The body was taken to the Hurlbut undertaking company establishment.
A Joplin resident nearly twenty years, Ray had been an employee of the Eagle Picher Lead Company all of that time. Surviving are his widow Mrs. Louise Ray; a son, Edwin Ray, at home; two brothers, Elmer Ray, 1821 Bird avenue, and Claude Ray of Picher Oklahoma, and three sisters, Mrs. Lola Chaney, Mrs. Lillie Guyll and Mrs. Nettie Sherman, all of Anderson Missouri. Funeral plans are incomplete. Coroner W. G. Hogan was notified of the death, but had not decided this afternoon whether an inquest would be held.
An inquest will be conducted at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at the Hurlbut chapel under the direction of Coroner W. G. Funeral services for Walter Ray, 39 years old, 2530 Picher avenue, who was fatally injured Saturday at the Galena Kansas smelter, will be conducted at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Hurlbut chapel... Burial will be in Forest Park cemetery. The body will lie in state at the residence until 12:45 o'clock this afternoon, after which it will lie in state at the chapel until the funeral. No inquest will be conducted. Pallbearers will be Hal Carver, Carl Botkin, D. Craig, William Webb, Raymond Daniels and Lawrence Daniels.
