Picher Oklahoma, Aug 20. John Rainey, 21 years old, a shaft man at the West Side Mine, a part of the Vinegar Hill Barr Mine, north of Picher, was instantly killed at 7:00 o'clock last night when a deluge of mud and water burst into the shaft in which he was working, knocked him from the platform on which he was standing, broke his safety belt and sent him hurting to the bottom, 180 feet below. Jay Westfall, working with Rainey, escaped the full force of the cave-in and was hoisted from the platform 60 feet to the surface. He was only scratched and bruised. Westfall and the body of Rainey were taken to the Picher hospital, in Picher, in a Durnil ambulance, from Picher, where the former was treated and the latter was pronounced dead. Rainey's body was embalmed at the Durnil funeral home and later was called for by an undertaker from Ralston Oklahoma, his former home. He was single and had been rooming on South Main street, in Picher.
